Sometime after #1 and prior to the start of their duties, the Head usher should gather the workers and perhaps the music people and pray for the pastor and for needs to be met during the service. Some churches block off the last 2 rows until the song service is ½ over.ġ8 Opening Prayer. You must tailor yours to the church plant you occupy and cover only what the usher does. The introduction should just be enough to give a little overview, but not get into a lot of detail about the job performance. Make yours simple but complete so everyone “knows the definition of a good job”. Remember, some folks who you work with in your congregation might not have ever read a formal job description. So be prayed up, operate in love and maintain an attitude of a servant not an enforcer of the rules. But you will do the work and you will say the words. Your pastor or other in the pulpit may have the unction of the Holy Spirit and give direction. An example would be someone throwing a noisy fit during the sermon, when do you remove them? What do you say to them? Where do you take them? You won’t find the answers written here. others require the leading of the Holy Spirit and pre-suppose that the usher is operating supernaturally on the job. Many duties are required, turning on lights, adjusting heat, inspecting bathrooms, etc. Also instructions reduce the need for on the spot decision making and things generally run smoother. Acts 2:1 if we are to expect Baptisms in the Holy Spirit and other manifestations of the Spirit in our church, we must be in one accord. They are not laws to be obeyed, they are a structure we use to insure everyone is in one accord. The guidelines in this job description will assist you in performing outstanding service to God and the local body. Also they cannot be ministered to, if they are always minister ing. We cannot have the same people doing the same thing all the time. And something about not being the center of attention. In the church, Jesus gets the Glory, and the Pastor or other in the pulpit get the attention, not the ushers. They seem to get everything done almost before you ask for it, and they do it in a way that you don’t notice how hard they are working. The best usher is like a waiter at a fancy restaurant. Thus you must represent God and the Pastor and leadership of the church in an honorable way. They may take the offering, seat people, serve communion, and are generally more visible to the congregation. Ushers are the most visible of workers during a service.
